Camelot Unchained MMORPG Set for Steam Early Access on June 2
City State Entertainment has confirmed that the MMORPG Camelot Unchained will enter early access on the Steam platform beginning June 2. The transition to the storefront marks a significant shift for the project, which has been under development for over a decade following its initial crowdfunding campaign in 2013.
Transition to Public Distribution
The move to Steam provides a broader distribution channel for the title, which focuses on large-scale, faction-based player-versus-player (PvP) combat. By utilizing the platform’s early access infrastructure, the developers aim to facilitate a wider testing environment. The release follows years of private alpha and beta testing phases that were previously restricted to early backers and contributors who participated in the original Kickstarter campaign.
For City State Entertainment, the Steam launch serves as a mechanism to scale server infrastructure and stress-test the proprietary “Unchained Engine,” which was built specifically to handle thousands of concurrent players in a single combat zone without the performance degradation typically associated with traditional MMORPG architectures.
Project Background and Development Context
Led by Mark Jacobs, the co-founder of Mythic Entertainment and lead designer of Dark Age of Camelot, the project was conceptualized as a spiritual successor to his previous work in the genre. Since its inception, the development cycle has faced multiple delays and shifts in scope, leading to extended periods of development that frequently exceeded the initial timelines projected during the 2013 fundraising phase.

The studio previously diverted resources to develop a secondary project, Colossus Industries, which utilized the same underlying engine technology. This decision drew criticism from segments of the backer community who expressed concerns regarding the allocation of resources and the extended timeline for the completion of Camelot Unchained. The studio has since consolidated its efforts back toward the core objectives of the primary title.
Operational Objectives
The inclusion of the game on Steam requires the implementation of standard platform features, including account integration and matchmaking services. City State Entertainment has indicated that the early access period will remain focused on refining the core “Tri-Realm” warfare system—the game’s central pillar—where players fight for control of territory in a persistent world environment.
The studio has yet to provide a definitive timeline for a full commercial release or the transition out of the early access phase. Future updates remain subject to the feedback gathered during the upcoming deployment on Steam and the continued stability of the engine under increased player concurrency.
