Cambuur Promotion Drama: Coach Slams Referee, Match Ends in Chaos
SC Cambuur coach Henk de Jong sharply criticized the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) and referee Wouter Wiersma following his team’s 3-4 home defeat against Jong AZ on Friday evening. De Jong questioned Wiersma’s suitability to officiate the match, citing the referee’s regional origins as a conflict of interest.
“He shouldn’t be refereeing here,” De Jong stated after the match, as reported by NU.nl. “I knew it beforehand, he is not capable of refereeing here.” De Jong further elaborated that Wiersma, who hails from Surhuisterveen – approximately thirty minutes from Leeuwarden – was “not capable” of handling a match at the Kooi Stadion.
The match itself was described as “insane” by multiple sources, featuring a late penalty and a period of play stoppage. Despite leading 3-2 for a significant portion of the second half, Cambuur conceded two late goals to lose the match. De Jong acknowledged his team’s missed opportunities and defensive vulnerabilities, admitting they conceded four goals, but maintained that the refereeing decisions played a significant role in the outcome.
De Jong specifically cited an unpunished foul on Mark Diemers as an example of inconsistent officiating, claiming similar incidents occurred throughout the game. VI.nl reported that De Jong was critical of his own team’s performance in addition to the refereeing.
The defeat complicates Cambuur’s promotion prospects to the Eredivisie. ADO Den Haag can secure an unofficial championship on Sunday with a win against De Graafschap. Cambuur’s opportunity to officially clinch promotion will arrive with their away match against FC Emmen two days later.
The KNVB has not yet responded to De Jong’s criticisms.
