California Trains: Upgrades Needed for State & Chicago Routes

February 13, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

California transportation officials are facing renewed calls to modernize the state’s rail infrastructure, including the long-distance California Zephyr line connecting the state to Chicago. The push for upgrades comes as passenger rail advocates point to aging equipment and limited service as impediments to efficient and appealing travel options within the state and across the country.

The California Zephyr, operated by Amtrak, currently runs daily in each direction, traversing 2,438 miles over approximately 52 hours, according to Amtrak’s route guide. The train passes through seven states – Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and California – offering passengers views of the Rocky Mountains and Sierra Nevada. While lauded for its scenic route, the service has drawn criticism for its aging fleet and infrequent departures.

The route connects Chicago to Emeryville, California, a city across the bay from San Francisco. Amtrak Vacations promotes the Zephyr as a three-day journey from Chicago to San Francisco, highlighting views of mountains, rivers, and deserts. Stops along the way include Denver and Glenwood Springs, Colorado, as well as Salt Lake City, Utah, Reno, and Sacramento, California.

Currently, a one-way ticket from Chicago to California starts at $330, according to Rome2Rio, but demand and availability can significantly impact pricing. Advocates argue that increased investment in the California Zephyr, and rail infrastructure more broadly, could provide a viable alternative to air and road travel, reducing congestion, and emissions.

The California Zephyr’s popularity is particularly notable during May and September, identified as the best times to ride due to favorable weather conditions. While both eastbound and westbound journeys offer compelling scenery, the westbound direction is often preferred by travelers. The train features amenities such as a sightseer lounge, cafe, dining car, and sleeper cars, but some passengers have reported issues with overcrowding and the condition of the cars.

Discussions regarding potential upgrades to the California Zephyr have not yet resulted in concrete plans or funding commitments from state or federal authorities. Amtrak has not issued a public statement regarding specific modernization efforts for the line as of today.
