State Bar of California Launches “Fresh Start” Settlement Program for Former attorneys with Outstanding Debt
SACRAMENTO,CA – The State Bar of California has introduced a new initiative, the “Fresh Start Settlement Program,” designed to assist former attorneys in resolving outstanding State Bar debt. This program, approved by the Board of Trustees, aims to streamline the collection of revenue while simultaneously making the attorney discipline system more equitable.
The program offers a important incentive for former attorneys to settle their debts: a 50% reduction of their total outstanding balance. This offer is available for a limited time, concluding on December 31, 2025. Notably, participation in the program requires no complex negotiations or the need to prove financial hardship, unless an individual seeks an additional reduction through a hardship declaration. Furthermore, there are no additional fees or interest charges associated with the settlement during this period.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the State Bar to reform its discipline system, making it fairer and more effective. The program also addresses the need to improve revenue collection from former members who may have outstanding financial obligations.
Former attorneys interested in taking advantage of the Fresh Start Settlement Program can find more facts and begin the participation process by visiting the official State Bar of California website at Fresh Start Settlement Program.
