We invite each of you to do the same, whatever you’re facing in life, we got this. We love you, and I’m excited to continue serving as president of BYU Hawaii.”
Kauwe, an Alzheimer’s researcher, explained that improved physical health over the past year, prompted by personal revelation and a high inherited risk for diabetes and cancer, allowed him to detect the issue quickly. He noted the cancer has not spread widely and he anticipates being resilient during treatment due to his improved health.
He expressed gratitude for the support he has received, including a priesthood blessing, the influence of the Holy Ghost, and the prayers and faith of others. He also quoted President Russell M. Nelson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who stated, “Brothers and sisters, the joy we feel has little to do with the circumstances of our lives and everything to do with the focus of our lives.” President Kauwe affirmed this sentiment with his wife, Monica.
President Kauwe asked the BYU-Hawaii community to focus on four key areas: being attentive to their spiritual and physical well-being, taking ownership of their learning and future service, strengthening their testimonies, and continuing the university’s progress.
“It will be a great comfort to me, as my primary focus is on healing, to know that you are focused on fulfilling our stewardship with excellence,” he said.
The university will provide periodic updates on President Kauwe’s health, but he expressed a desire to maintain normalcy. “But the last thing I want is for my condition to become the basis of every interaction we have,” he said. “If you see us around campus, please share with us some great news in your life. Tell us how you’re loving and serving others here at BYU-Hawaii.”
Concluding his message, President kauwe reaffirmed his faith. “I know that God lives and has a plan for eternal happiness for each of us,” he said. “I know that Jesus Christ lives and that his Atonement is central to God’s plan. I know that it brings us peace and joy, even in the hardest of times. I know that families can be forever, and I’m grateful for the priesthood power that seals Monica and me and our kids for all eternity.”
President and Sister Kauwe recently delivered devotional addresses to begin the fall semester.
