Bus Driver Dies in Litueche Traffic Accident With 35 Passengers
An intercity bus traveling from Santiago to Pichilemu crashed into a hillside late Thursday, September 24, 2026, leaving the driver dead and five passengers injured. Major Patricio Cisternas of the Third Police Precinct in Pichilemu confirmed the fatality and ongoing emergency procedures at the scene on Route I-62-G.
Tragic Crash Occurs on Regional Border
The fatal accident took place past 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at kilometer 16.500 of the Ruta I-62-G, situated in the Quelentaro sector within the commune of Litueche. The location sits precisely at the boundary line connecting the Metropolitan Region and the O’Higgins Region. The vehicle involved belonged to the transportation company TransAntin and was carrying a total of 35 passengers on its route south toward the coast.
According to field reports from Senapred O’Higgins, the vehicle collided directly with the hillside of the route. The impact trapped the driver inside the wreckage and caused injuries to five individuals traveling on board.
Emergency Response and Police Investigation
First responders rushed to the isolated stretch of the highway following the late-night collision. Teams from Litueche Fire Department, San Pedro Fire Department, the municipal risk management office GRD Litueche, local Carabineros detachments, and regional ambulance services deployed to the crash site to secure the area and extricate those affected.
Major Cisternas detailed the immediate steps taken following the emergency response. “We are located on Route 160G at kilometer 16, where unfortunately a traffic accident occurred a few minutes ago,” Cisternas stated. The police official confirmed the death of the driver and noted that the remaining 35 passengers were immediately subjected to medical evaluations. “Which at this hour are verifying injuries to certify the state of health of each one of them,” Cisternas added.
Following directives issued by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, specialized officers from the Traffic Accident Investigation Section of Carabineros, known as SIAT, mobilized to the site. Investigators are examining the physical evidence along Route I-62-G to determine the exact mechanical or environmental factors that caused the bus to leave the roadway and strike the hillside.
