Burnham Signals Potential Leadership challenge to Starmer, Citing ”Climate of Fear” Within Labor
Manchester, UK – September 26, 2024 - Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, has publicly acknowledged that Labour MPs are encouraging him to challenge Keir Starmer for the party leadership, igniting speculation about a potential third bid for the top job. Though, Burnham insists any such move must be rooted in a comprehensive vision for the country, “more than a personality contest.”
Speaking to the Daily Telegraph ahead of the Labour Party conference this weekend, Burnham revealed he’s been approached by MPs throughout the summer urging him to run. While stopping short of declaring his intentions,he confirmed his continued ambition to become Prime Minister, referencing his previous leadership bids.
“I stood twice to be leader of the Labour party. And I think that tells you, doesn’t it?” Burnham stated.
The former Labour minister’s comments come amidst growing unease within the party, with Burnham accusing Downing street of fostering a “climate of fear” and contributing to “alienation and demoralisation” among Labour MPs. He also recently told the New statesman that “wholesale change” is needed to address an “existential threat” facing the party.
Burnham emphasized that he wouldn’t remain silent on issues crucial to Greater Manchester and the country, vowing to “speak directly” rather than ”toe the line.” He outlined potential policy proposals, including higher council tax rates for some homes in southern England and a return to a 50p top rate of income tax, signaling a distinct policy direction.
The potential challenge has already drawn a response from within the Labour ranks. housing Secretary Steve Reed defended starmer’s leadership, pointing to the party’s recent electoral gains and dismissing Burnham
