The City of Burlington, Iowa, is receiving a federal grant of more than $6.7 million from the Department of War to construct a permanent fire station at 2100 N. Roosevelt Ave. Designed to serve the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, the facility will station full-time heavy firefighting apparatus, advanced emergency response equipment, and expanded staff closer to the installation gates while also handling commercial and residential calls in northern Burlington.

Municipal leaders in Burlington secured the funding through the competitive Defense Community Infrastructure Program, administered by the Department of War’s Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation. The grant addresses physical infrastructure deficiencies that support military installations and improve resilience for service members and neighboring communities.
Project timelines and final grant agreements will be coordinated between the city and the Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation in the coming weeks, according to municipal reports. The new facility directly addresses logistical hurdles by stationing heavy equipment and expanded staffing significantly closer to the ammunition plant’s entry points.

Plant leadership formally endorsed the infrastructure project during the federal fiscal 2026 application cycle.

Emergency Response Realities and Local Impact
The ammunition plant’s emergency services division currently operates with minimal staffing. For major emergencies, structural fires, and multi-patient incidents, the facility relies on the Burlington Fire Department as its primary mutual aid partner. The Burlington Fire Department stands as the only full-time professional department operating in the immediate area.
While a temporary facility has operated roughly four miles from the installation, it also houses minimal staff. By placing a permanent station closer to the grounds, the city will reduce heavy apparatus travel distances and lower response times for critical incidents. Beyond serving the needs of the military installation, the 2100 N. Roosevelt Ave. location will handle routine residential and commercial calls across northern Burlington, broadening local emergency management capabilities.
