Burkina Faso Researchers Develop Plant-Based Bio-Insecticide
- The botanical larvicide eliminates 80 to 90 percent of targeted mosquito vectors.
- The formula targets Anopheles gambiae s.l. and Aedes aegypti larvae.
- Researchers developed a matricial tablet formulation to extend the product’s active duration in the field.
Project Findings Presented in Ziniaré
The research project, titled "Development of a long-acting bio-insecticide based on Calotropis procera leaf extract against malaria and dengue vectors," ran for approximately three and a half years.
Researchers Develop Tablet to Kill Malaria and Dengue Vectors
The research team evaluated the larvicidal activity of plant extracts on Anopheles gambiae s.l., the vector for malaria, alongside Aedes aegypti, which transmits dengue fever. Alongside testing toxicity against these vectors, the laboratory work characterized the phytochemical properties of the plant extracts. Investigators then engineered a matricial tablet formulation designed to prolong the release and active duration of the botanical compound in aquatic breeding sites.
Project Leaders Seek Support for Large Scale Manufacturing
The initiative relied on domestic raw materials and national scientific expertise, receiving financial backing from the Support Fund for Education and Research, formerly known as the National Fund for Research and Innovation for Development. With the laboratory phase concluded, project leaders are seeking institutional support from authorities to transition toward larger-scale manufacturing, reduce production costs, and improve public availability.
Field Evaluation Requirements
Widespread deployment of the Calotropis procera intervention remains dependent on upcoming regulatory and field evaluations. Before public health agencies can consider general adoption, investigators must confirm field efficacy, environmental safety, and the economic viability of large-scale production protocols.
