Union Berlin’s Derrick Köhn Reveals Tactical Shifts from Galatasaray, Werder Bremen
Derrick Köhn, who transferred from Galatasaray Istanbul to union Berlin in August for a reported €4 million plus bonuses, has quickly become a regular starter for the Bundesliga club, featuring in all seven league matches, including the last four consecutively. The 26-year-old’s journey to Köpenick followed a loan spell at Werder Bremen, where a €5.125 million purchase option was ultimately not exercised.
Köhn detailed noticeable differences in playing styles between his former clubs and Union Berlin. He noted Union’s more direct approach compared to Galatasaray’s possession-based game, stating, “At Gala it was often the case that we played a completely different style of football with more ball possession and ball relays that weren’t as intense as here in Berlin.” He also observed a contrast in tempo between Werder Bremen and Union, explaining, “At Werder they often played from the back, [while] Union wants to find our way to the gate quickly.”
The player acknowledged a need for physical improvement, adding,”I was told that I still need to improve my endurance a bit…that’s why I’m doing a few runs after training.” Köhn’s adaptation highlights the tactical adjustments required when moving between different leagues and clubs.
