Bungie Had Six Games in Development During Sony Acquisition

August 24, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Bungie had as many as six projects in various stages of development at the time of its acquisition by Sony Interactive Entertainment. This portfolio included both internal titles and collaborative efforts, according to reports detailing the studio’s operational strategy leading up to the 2022 deal.

Scope of the Development Pipeline

At the point Sony finalized its $3.6 billion acquisition of the Bellevue-based developer, Bungie was managing a significantly expanded production slate. While the studio was best known for its ongoing support of Destiny 2, internal records and industry reporting indicate that the company was simultaneously fostering up to six distinct projects.

These initiatives were intended to diversify Bungie’s intellectual property beyond the Destiny franchise. The projects encompassed a mix of new creative endeavors and potential expansions of existing brand identity, though the studio maintained a policy of keeping most of these titles in early-stage development to allow for iterative design changes.

Strategic Integration with Sony

The acquisition was structured to allow Bungie to remain an independent subsidiary under the PlayStation Studios umbrella, granting the developer autonomy over its creative output while providing access to Sony’s infrastructure. This arrangement was designed to support the studio’s goal of evolving into a multi-game publisher.

Despite the breadth of the development slate at the time of the sale, the industry landscape for live-service and large-scale games shifted in the years following the acquisition. Bungie has since undergone significant organizational restructuring, including workforce reductions in 2023 and 2024, as the studio moved to narrow its focus. These adjustments were characterized by leadership as a necessary step to align the company’s internal resources with its most viable long-term projects.

Current Project Status

Following the internal restructuring efforts, Bungie has consolidated its development efforts to prioritize core operations. While the studio continues to refine its long-term roadmap, it has not provided a updated public timeline regarding the status of the six projects that were under development at the time of the Sony purchase. The company remains focused on the delivery of its current live-service commitments while maintaining silence on the future of its unannounced prototypes.
