At the time of the interview, Budgie had recently seen guitarist Simon Lees join the lineup, replacing Andy Hart who had served in the role from 2002-03. Lees, born in 1975, brought his own experience, including work with former Judas Priest vocalist Al Atkins.
Shelley acknowledged that original guitarist Tony Bourge was unlikely to rejoin the band due to his established business commitments. “I’d like to have a knock with him just for the crack, just for fun,” Shelley commented, “but he’s a family man, he’s got it sorted. You’ve got to remember how old we are now – a lot of people are moving into their slippers!” despite the passage of time, Shelley himself maintained a vibrant energy, embodying the “pocket battleship” persona he had cultivated throughout his career.
The band’s back catalog was set for a critically important reissue campaign. The first five Budgie albums were slated for release in expanded, remastered editions through their own label,Noteworthy. Additionally, the album The Last Stage, which was in progress when the band’s contract with RCA ended in 1983-84,was to be unveiled. This release promised approximately a dozen previously unheard tracks, including covers of “Nutbush City Limits”
