Quebec residents are finding some relief at the grocery store this week, as locally sourced foods are featured in discounted specials, according to a novel menu released by Myriam Gendron, creator of the website Tout Simplement Bouffe.
Gendron’s weekly menu focuses on affordable recipes utilizing the best grocery deals available, aiming to help consumers cope with rising food prices. This week’s selections highlight the availability of Quebec-grown produce, including carrots, cabbage and leeks.
“This week, we’re combating the February gloom with a surprisingly local and colorful menu!” Gendron stated, as reported by Journal de Montréal.
The menu features leeks, currently at their lowest price in two months, offering a versatile base for soups, sauces, and stews. Quebec-grown pork mince is also on special, though consumers are advised that it is a mix of fresh and thawed portions and should be fully cooked before storage.
IGA is offering the lowest price on fresh parsley, a key ingredient in several recipes on the menu. Gendron also shared a tip for extending the life of fresh herbs: storing them in a jar of water in the refrigerator, similar to cut flowers, or wrapping them in damp cloths.
The weekly menu includes recipes such as Noodles with Pork in the style of Imperial Pastries, Mojo Chicken, Mediterranean Trout, Broccoli and Leek Soup, and Spring Rolls with Chicken. A broccoli salad and orange energy balls are also featured.
Specific items highlighted as good value this week include Quebec carrots at $0.99 for a 2lb bag at Metro, Quebec green cabbage at $0.99/lb at Metro and Super C, broccoli crowns at $1.76 at Super C, Canadian chicken thighs at $1.99/lb at Metro, fresh steelhead trout fillets at $8.99/lb at IGA, oranges at $3.96 for a 4lb bag at Metro, sliced Quebec leeks at $1.44 for a 250g bag at Metro, a 4-pack of colored peppers at $4.99 at IGA and Maxi, and lean Quebec pork mince at $2.49/lb at IGA.
Tout Simplement Bouffe also offers a mobile app and a newsletter for subscribers, and is celebrating its second anniversary with a 25% discount on the first three months of subscription using the code TSB25. The site also provides a “fridge-emptying” tool for recipe ideas and features recipes for various occasions, including Valentine’s Day and the Super Bowl.
The Facebook page for Tout Simplement Bouffe recently announced a temporary pause in publishing weekly specials due to illness within the family, with a promise to return in 2026 with a special menu.
