Bucks Prioritize DeMar DeRozan Over Zach LaVine in Trade pursuit, Sources Indicate
MILWAUKEE – As the Milwaukee Bucks navigate a challenging start to the season, front office discussions are increasingly focused on acquiring forward DeMar DeRozan rather than guard Zach LaVine to bolster support for Giannis Antetokounmpo, according to multiple reports. The shift in focus comes amid NBA trade rumors and the Bucks’ current 9-12 record, leaving them outside of the playoff picture.
The need for offensive assistance alongside Antetokounmpo is paramount, and while LaVine has been a subject of trade speculation, his contract and perceived difficulty in moving him are creating hurdles. DeRozan, conversely, presents a more attainable and financially viable option for a Bucks team seeking a consistent scoring threat.
LaVine currently has a player option worth $48,967,380 next season that he is unlikely to decline, as noted by Spotrac. DeRozan, 36, is averaging 18.2 points, three rebounds, and 3.6 assists this season. His contract is substantially more manageable, costing just over half of LaVine’s over the next two seasons, per Spotrac.
Brett Siegel of clutch Points reported that derozan is considered more likely to be moved this season than LaVine. Over the past five seasons, DeRozan has averaged 24.04 points per game, offering a proven scoring track record that surpasses the current production of Bucks forward Kyle Kuzma, who is averaging 13.5 points this season.
The Bucks’ front office is also weighing DeRozan’s playoff experience – despite past team shortcomings with the Chicago Bulls – against LaVine’s limited postseason success. A trade for DeRozan would represent a significant upgrade for Milwaukee, aiming to provide Antetokounmpo with the necessary support to contend for a second NBA championship.
