BTS Arirang: New Album, Concert & Return from Military Service

March 22, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

SEOUL – BTS returned to the stage Saturday night in Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Square, performing for approximately 104,000 fans in their first concert as a full group in nearly four years, marking a highly anticipated comeback following the completion of their mandatory military service. The performance, streamed live on Netflix, served as a launchpad for their new album, Arirang, released Friday and the start of a world tour slated to span 82 dates across 23 countries, beginning April 9th in Goyang.

The concert featured the live debuts of eight tracks from Arirang: “Body To Body,” “Hooligan,” “2.0,” “Aliens,” “FYA,” “SWIM,” “Like Animals,” and “NORMAL.” The return to live performance comes after a period of individual military service undertaken by each of the seven members – RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook – beginning in late 2022. The hiatus was announced in 2022, allowing the group to fulfill their obligations under South Korea’s conscription laws.

The choice of Gwanghwamun Square, set against the backdrop of a 14th-century palace gateway, was itself a symbolic gesture, reflecting the band’s status as cultural ambassadors for South Korea. As noted by BBC Korean, the square was awash in purple, the signature color of BTS and its dedicated fanbase, known as ARMY. The stage design, resembling a triumphal arch, underscored the honor bestowed upon the group for their global impact.

Arirang, the album, draws its name from Korea’s most beloved folk song, a tune steeped in national sentiment and historical significance. As NPR reported, the song “Arirang” itself has a complex history, evolving from a symbol of resistance during the Japanese colonial period to a broader representation of Korean identity. The album’s title reflects a conscious effort by BTS to connect with their cultural roots while continuing to innovate within the K-pop genre.

The band is expected to generate an estimated $1 billion in revenue from the tour, according to reports, but South Korean officials emphasize the broader cultural and economic benefits of BTS’s global reach. Bloomberg News reported in October 2025 that BTS would embark on their “largest world tour to date” in 2026, a prediction now realized with the launch of the Arirang World Tour.

Saturday’s concert wasn’t without its challenges. RM, the group’s leader, performed largely seated due to an ankle injury, though the nature of the injury was not detailed. Despite this, the performance was met with overwhelming enthusiasm from fans, many of whom secured tickets through a highly competitive process. According to the BBC, only 22,000 fans were able to access the concert venue itself, with the remainder watching on giant screens erected around the square.

The Arirang World Tour is scheduled to continue through March 14, 2027, with additional shows planned for Japan, the Middle East, and other countries. Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, has already appealed to South Korea’s president, Lee Jae Myung, to add more shows in Mexico City, following a request from local promoter Ocesa, though the band’s packed schedule currently makes additional dates unfeasible.
