BSO Music Director Dismissal: Board Silence Fuels Frustration

March 22, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

A terse and uninformative response from the Friends of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) has deepened the mystery surrounding the Board of Trustees’ decision not to renew the contract of Music Director Andris Nelsons. The statement, issued by Peter Schlaht, director of the Friends of the BSO, was sent to concerned members following inquiries about the abrupt end to Nelsons’ tenure.

Schlaht’s message, dated March 21, 2026, acknowledges the “tough time” and expresses appreciation for members’ “thoughts.” It confirms the decision not to renew Nelsons’ contract is causing distress within the BSO community, but offers no explanation for the Board’s action. The statement emphasizes the Trustees’ “fiduciary obligation” and commitment to the long-term health of the institution.

“I’m sorry that I’m unable to share more context around the Board’s decision,” Schlaht wrote, adding that comments would be passed along to the BSO leadership team and that board confidentiality policies could be provided upon request. The message concludes by stating that the Board is “reading all the emails” but may not respond individually, and looks forward to providing updates.

The lack of transparency has prompted criticism from those familiar with the BSO, with some characterizing the Friends of the BSO’s response as “drivel,” according to reports. The decision not to renew Nelsons’ contract, announced earlier this month, came as a surprise to many in the classical music world. Nelsons, who too serves as music director of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, recently embarked on a tour with his third orchestra, a development noted by Slipped Disc.

Norman Lebrecht, writing in The Critic Magazine, described the situation as a departure of a “great conductor” from the stage, but offered no insight into the reasons behind the BSO’s decision. Reports indicate the Board has remained silent on the matter, fueling speculation about the circumstances leading to the non-renewal. The BSO has not announced a timeline for naming a successor to Nelsons.
