DENVER – The Denver Broncos extended their winning streak to eight games with a dramatic 22-19 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, fueled by a last-second field goal. The win significantly alters the AFC West landscape, challenging the Chiefs’ longstanding divisional dominance.
Kansas City, previously holding a nine-year streak of AFC West titles, now finds itself at 5-5, while the Broncos surge to 9-2, taking a commanding lead in the division. This outcome marks the Broncos’ fifth fourth-quarter comeback of the season and casts doubt on the Chiefs’ ability to secure another division crown. The result sets up a crucial remainder of the season as both teams vie for playoff positioning.
Wil Lutz’s 35-yard field goal as time expired sealed the victory, offering redemption after a similar attempt was blocked in Kansas City last year, resulting in a 16-14 Chiefs win. The game-winning drive, covering 58 yards in 10 plays, was orchestrated by quarterback Bo Nix. A key play during the drive was a 20-yard connection with Courtland Sutton on third-and-15, keeping the chains moving. Denver controlled the clock, burning the final 2:59.
The Broncos’ offense accumulated 342 total yards compared to the Chiefs’ 311. Nix completed 24 of 37 passes for 295 yards. Troy Franklin contributed four receptions for 84 yards, and pat Bryant added five for 82. Jaleel McLaughlin powered into the end zone for a 4-yard touchdown.
Both teams entered halftime tied 6-6, struggling to capitalize in the red zone, going a combined 0-for-2. However, the Broncos demonstrated stronger performance in the second half.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick mahomes finished with 29 of 45 passes completed for 276 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Travis Kelce was a primary target, hauling in nine passes for 91 yards and a touchdown, while Kareem Hunt rushed for 59 yards on 13 carries, also scoring a touchdown.
Defensively, Broncos cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian stood out, intercepting Mahomes and recording two sacks, six tackles, and a pass defended.
