Brock Lesnar: How He Forced Dana White’s Hand & Almost Missed His UFC Chance

March 25, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Brock Lesnar, the former UFC Heavyweight champion, revealed that UFC CEO Dana White initially dismissed him, refusing to return his calls before ultimately offering him a contract. The revelation came during an appearance on the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast, according to reports on March 25, 2026.

Lesnar recounted a proactive attempt to secure a place in the UFC after competing in K-1 Dynamite at the LA Coliseum. “Dana White wanted nothing to do with me,” Lesnar stated. “He wouldn’t return my phone call.” At the time, the UFC was focused on establishing legitimacy within the sport of mixed martial arts and was hesitant to embrace a star with a background in professional wrestling and limited MMA experience.

Undeterred, Lesnar took matters into his own hands. He purchased four nosebleed tickets to a UFC event at the MGM Grand headlined by Randy Couture against Gabriel Gonzaga. Following Couture’s victory, Lesnar bypassed security, entered the Octagon, and directly approached White. “I scaled the security railing, ran to the Octagon, grabbed Dana, and I introduced myself. I said, I’m Brock Lesnar and we went to the back, and he says, well, listen, I’ll give you a shot,” Lesnar explained.

That “shot” materialized as a fight against Frank Mir at UFC 81. Though, Lesnar suffered a swift submission loss via kneebar in under two minutes. Despite the disappointing debut, White recognized the potential financial impact of Lesnar’s presence. “I went back to the locker room, and I was like, I screwed it up,” Lesnar said. “And then Dana comes in. He’s like—since they know the pay-per-views buys instantly, right. So the numbers must have been really, really excellent—Dana is like, ‘No, you’re not done.’ And then the next day, we negotiated a real contract.”

Lesnar’s first fight reportedly generated approximately 650,000 pay-per-view buys, a figure that prompted the UFC to invest in him long-term. He would travel on to become a significant draw for the promotion, capturing and defending the Heavyweight title twice during his UFC career.

Lesnar acknowledged that his initial lack of credibility was a legitimate concern for White. “I had no credibility. I don’t blame him,” Lesnar said. “I was an amateur wrestler and a ‘fake’ entertainer. I fought a tomato can in my first fight. I beat him in 90 seconds. I didn’t prove myself yet. So he threw me to the wolves. He said, ‘I’m not giving you any straightforward fights.’ My first fight is against Frank. You know, a lethal dude. He almost broke my leg in half, right? So he’s the real deal, so I just Yeah. It was just one of those things where I had to prove myself to him.”
