Brno Secures European Funding for Flood Protection Upgrades, Eyes Further Investment for South District Progress
Brno has successfully secured nearly half of the necessary funding from European sources for its ongoing flood protection project. The city is now actively pursuing additional European grants to finance a critical next phase of its southern flood defense system. This expansion aims to relocate the planned new train station out of the flood-prone area, a notable undertaking estimated to cost between 70 and 80 billion Czech crowns, inclusive of associated infrastructure development.
Minister of the Environment Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL) highlighted the importance of this relocation, stating, “This segment of the flood protection measures is essential to accommodate the station. It is indeed vital for the city’s growth and the entire new South district.” Hladík, who previously served as a deputy mayor of Brno, played a role in facilitating the changes to the river embankment.
Residents Sylva and Tomáš expressed their enthusiasm for the revitalized area, anticipating its future appeal: “Once the trees mature and everything is lush and green, this will be a fantastic spot.” Their dog,a retriever,is reportedly eager to take a dip in the river.
