A British woman is among five people confirmed dead after a severe snowstorm struck the Patagonia region of Chile,authorities reported Tuesday. The victims were found inside Torres del Paine National Park, a renowned destination in southern Chile.According to Jose Antonio Ruiz, the presidential delegate of Magallanes, the other fatalities include two German nationals and two Mexican nationals. Four individuals were rescued alive during the operation.
“We appreciate the effort of all civilian, military, public and private institutions that participated in this operation,” stated the regional presidential office in a Facebook post. The search has concluded, with efforts now focused on repatriating the bodies and coordinating with respective consulates.
Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font commended the rescue teams’ “tireless” work, noting the challenging conditions, including heavy snowfall and winds up to 118 mph.
“To the families, friends and loved ones of the five people from Mexico, Germany and the United Kingdom who lost their lives in the incident in Torres del Paine, I send my heartfelt condolences,” President Boric wrote on X, adding that Chilean authorities are prepared to offer support.
