Born in 1951, Frieda followed his grandfather, a barber, and his father, a hairdresser, into the trade. He opened his salon in London in 1976. From there, he built a reputation for meticulous, innovative cutting techniques.
Stylist Shapes Hair for Royals and Stars
During his decades-long career, Frieda worked with high-profile figures across politics, music, and film. His client list included U.S. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, pop musicians Madonna and Mick Jagger, and actors Nicole Kidman and Scarlett Johansson.
In 1976, he introduced the “Purdey” bowl cut, a style that gained widespread popularity across the United Kingdom and beyond. His core philosophy centered on prioritizing the client over financial gain. “If a client is in front of you, focus on the hairstyling itself rather than money,” Frieda once stated regarding his approach. “Giving her the best hairstyle of her life should be considered the hairdresser’s reward.”
Hair Care Products Sold for Millions
Frieda expanded his operations across Europe before entering the United States market in 1990. He launched a line of hair care products bearing his name, establishing a commercial enterprise that eventually drew corporate acquisition.
In 2002, he sold his hair care product business to a Japanese corporation for $450 million, or 600 billion won. Frieda was married twice, including his first marriage to British singer Lulu in 1977.
Representatives at the John Frieda Salon noted that the industry lost a true legend and innovator with his passing.
