The celestial object was officially cataloged by the International Astronomical Union on September 16, 2025, after being identified the previous week, according to reporting by Earth Sky. The comet was first spotted on September 11 by Ukrainian amateur astronomer Vladimir Bezugly using the SOHO space observatory’s ultraviolet detector SWAN, where it appeared as a bright speck moving away from the Sun.
Discovery and Official Designation
Utilizing the robotic FRAM telescope in Chile, Mašek captured the first confirmatory photographs of the incoming object. "I was surprised when we spotted such a bright comet with a very long tail," Mašek stated, as reported by Earth Sky.
Observation Timeline and Visibility
Currently, the comet is observable on the night sky after sunset for inhabitants of the southern part of the planet, positioned between Mars and the star Spica, as noted by Universe Today. Observers on the Northern Hemisphere can expect the object to become visible in the upcoming weeks, appearing at dusk above the western horizon through astronomical telescopes or potentially camera or smartphone lenses if brightness increases.
NASA astronomers have stated that predicting whether the brightness of the icy body will intensify or fade remains difficult, though many comets appear brighter as they approach Earth. The closest approach to the planet is scheduled between October 12 and October 19, when the comet will reach a distance equivalent to one-quarter of the space between Earth and the Sun. NASA experts noted that this window coincides with the nearly peak activity of the Orionids meteor shower, allowing observers to track dozens of meteors alongside the green-glowing comet.
Cometary Risks and Orbital Dynamics
Comets consist primarily of ice and dust, presenting distinct characteristics compared to near-Earth asteroids. According to Earth Sky, comets are generally considered less predictable and travel at significantly higher speeds than asteroids. For historical context, the outlet noted that the 1997 passage of comet Hale-Bopp involved a velocity of 52.9 kilometers per second, though scientists emphasize that the mathematical probability of a direct comet impact with Earth remains exceptionally low, occurring roughly once every 45 million years.
