Bridgerton Season 5: Francesca & Michaela’s Romance Confirmed | Netflix News
Production is underway in London on the fifth season of Netflix’s Bridgerton, which will center on Francesca Bridgerton, played by Hannah Dodd, and Michaela Stirling, portrayed by Masali Baduza, according to a statement released by the streaming service.
The upcoming season will follow Francesca two years after the death of her husband, John Stirling, Earl of Kilmartin. Francesca will re-enter the marriage mart, initially motivated by practical considerations, but her plans develop into complicated by the return of John’s cousin, Michaela, to manage the Kilmartin estate. The storyline suggests a developing romance between the two women, prompting Francesca to question her intentions and explore her passions.
Hannah Dodd assumed the role of Francesca in the show’s third season, taking over from Ruby Stokes. The new season promises to delve into Francesca’s reserved nature and her journey of self-discovery as she navigates her feelings for Michaela. Netflix described Francesca as someone who has “long felt out of place in the world,” and suggests that Michaela’s presence will lead to significant personal revelations.
Masali Baduza’s character, Michaela, is described as possessing a charming exterior that masks a vulnerability and a tendency to withdraw from discomfort. The season will require Michaela to confront these vulnerabilities as she grapples with her connection to John’s legacy and her growing relationship with Francesca.
The storyline represents a significant departure from Julia Quinn’s original “Bridgerton” novels, where Michaela Stirling was depicted as a male character and the love interest of Francesca. This gender-flipped adaptation was introduced in Season 3, with the appearance of Michaela in the finale, and signals a potential shift in the show’s exploration of relationships.
Season four of Bridgerton, which recently concluded, featured Francesca’s brother, Benedict, exploring his bisexuality. The show has previously introduced same-sex relationships, but the extent to which this theme will be further developed in upcoming seasons remains unclear.
The fifth season will consist of eight episodes and is currently filming in London. Netflix has not yet announced a release date.
