BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio — Construction is rapidly progressing on “The Bridge,” a $13 million multipurpose health, education, and community center at Bridgeport High school, poised to revolutionize career readiness for students of all ages. The facility, slated to open for the 2026-2027 school year, represents a significant investment in the future of Bridgeport students, aiming to equip them with the skills and experience needed to thrive from day one after graduation.
A Foundation for Future Success
The Bridge isn’t simply an addition to Bridgeport High School; it’s a strategic initiative designed to foster career exploration and development throughout a student’s academic journey. Unlike traditional models where career planning frequently enough begins in high school, Bridgeport is implementing a extensive, K-12 approach. “Through elementary, middle, and high school, you have an opportunity at the younger grades to experience career awareness programs and opportunities,” explains Curriculum Coordinator Leslie kosanovic. This early exposure aims to spark interest and help students identify potential pathways.
the curriculum builds progressively. Middle school students will benefit from foundational courses, with a particular emphasis on “designed thinking” – a problem-solving methodology increasingly valued by employers. As students transition to high school, they’ll have access to more focused career exploration opportunities and the ability to participate in College Credit Plus programs, allowing them to earn college credit while still in high school. Ohio Department of Education provides more information on this programme.
Addressing the Post-Graduation Transition
Superintendent Brent Ripley emphasizes the importance of preparing students for the challenges of post-graduation life. “Think about how challenging that is to make that decision – what do you want to do for the rest of your life – when you’re in high school or middle school,” he stated. The Bridge is designed to alleviate this pressure by providing students with a deeper understanding of their aptitudes and strengths. The facility will facilitate training in various career pathways, ensuring students aren’t starting from scratch upon entering college or the workforce.
this proactive approach addresses a critical need in modern education. Many students enter higher education or the job market unsure of their career goals, leading to wasted time and resources. By providing early exposure, personalized guidance, and practical skills training, Bridgeport aims to empower it’s students to make informed decisions and pursue fulfilling careers.
Construction Progress and Timeline
Recent favorable weather conditions have accelerated construction on The Bridge. Superintendent Ripley provided an update on the progress, noting that crews are currently framing the top section of the structure and will soon begin work on the lower levels. “You can see they’re framing in the top section of the bridge right now, they’ll be working on the bottom section here shortly,” Ripley said. The concrete floor for the gymnasium and multipurpose area is also scheduled to be poured soon.
Inside the building, significant progress is being made on classroom infrastructure. Metal framing is in place, dividing the spaces, and essential utilities – wiring, ethernet, and plumbing – are being installed. Ripley confirmed that the project remains on schedule. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for August, with the building expected to be fully operational by the start of the 2026-2027 school year.
