Brexit: London Mayor Sadiq Khan on Bitter or Sweet Outcome

March 23, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has publicly urged the Labour Party to adopt a policy of seeking to rejoin the European Union at the next general election. Khan’s call, made in recent days, represents a significant intervention in the ongoing debate within the Labour Party regarding its future relationship with the EU.

Downing Street has already dismissed Khan’s proposal. A spokesperson for the Prime Minister stated that the government remains committed to the result of the 2016 referendum and will not seek to reverse Brexit, according to reports from Politico.eu.

Khan’s appeal to the Labour leadership comes as the party considers its platform for the upcoming election. The Mayor argued that rejoining the EU is in the best interests of the UK, citing economic benefits and closer ties with European partners. He believes a commitment to reversing Brexit would be a vote winner, according to The Guardian.

The Independent reported that Khan directly called on Labour to reverse Brexit and rejoin the EU, framing it as a necessary step to address economic challenges facing the country. Anadolu Ajansı also covered the story, highlighting Khan’s push for the Labour Party to prioritize EU re-entry.

The Labour Party has not yet formally responded to Khan’s call. The party leadership is currently weighing its options and assessing the political implications of adopting such a policy. Internal discussions are reportedly ongoing, with differing views among senior figures regarding the merits of campaigning on a pro-EU platform.
