Brazil Defense Exports Surge: 467% Growth in Four Years

March 24, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

BRASÍLIA – Brazilian defense industry exports surged to $3.4 billion in 2025, a nearly 467 percent increase from $600 million four years prior, the Brazilian government announced Monday. The growth was highlighted during a ceremony in Brasília where Vice President and Minister of Development, Industry, Trade and Services, Geraldo Alckmin, underscored the sector’s expanding external sales and future prospects.

“We have already made great strides, breaking export records in the defense industry. We went from $0.6 billion four years ago to $3.4 billion last year, with a growth trend and enormous expectations for the future,” Alckmin stated, according to a government press release.

Alckmin connected the performance to the government’s broader industrial policies, emphasizing innovation, sustainability, competitiveness, and export expansion. He specifically cited the defense industry as a strategic pillar for national sovereignty, aligning with the goals of the Nova Indústria Brasil (NIB) program.

The NIB program’s sixth mission focuses on technologies of interest to national sovereignty and defense, according to the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services. Alckmin stressed the necessitate to expand into international markets to achieve greater scale for the industry, noting the upcoming implementation of the Mercosur-European Union trade agreement on May 1st. “It is the largest agreement between blocs in the world. We need to transform this opportunity into business, jobs and reciprocal investments,” he said.

Defense Minister José Múcio Monteiro, who co-hosted the launch of the Base Industrial de Defesa (BID) product catalog, emphasized the link between a robust defense industry and national autonomy. “It means having the capacity to maintain the national defense structure autonomously, free from external interference and reducing that need for dependence,” Monteiro said, as reported by Brasil 247.

The newly launched BID catalog, available in both Portuguese and English, features 154 companies and 364 products, encompassing a diverse range of Brazilian defense capabilities, including vessels, armored vehicles, aircraft, avionics, and surveillance systems. The Ministry of Defense intends to distribute the catalog at military events, specialized trade shows, embassies, and representative offices to promote Brazilian defense products globally.

Alckmin further stated that a strong defense industry is “a life insurance for the nation and an engine for the New Brazil Industry,” according to a report from brasil247.com. The Vice President as well highlighted the potential for positive spillover effects into other sectors, including health, agriculture, and science, driven by technological advancements in the defense sector.
