Bassey Dominates, Eyes Celtics Roster Spot
Summer League standout makes strong case for bolstering Boston’s frontcourt.
Charles Bassey is turning heads in the Summer League, showcasing his skills and determination in hopes of securing a spot on the Boston Celtics’ roster. His recent performance has fueled speculation about Boston adding depth at center.
Instant Impact
The Celtics added Bassey just before their first game against the Grizzlies. “It was last-minute,”
Bassey said, describing the quick turnaround after his agent’s call. He quickly joined Amari Williams and Kenneth Lofton Jr. as the team’s primary bigs in Las Vegas.
Bassey, bringing four seasons of NBA experience, made an immediate impact, notching a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds in just 18 minutes during the Celtics’ 92-78 victory. His performance underscored his potential value to the team.
Coach’s Acclaim
Summer League coach Matt Reynolds praised Bassey’s quick integration and impact. “He did not participate in the live portion day one but he came in day two…it was just clear that that guy can make an impact in the game and you saw that throughout the course of the game today. I think he was huge for us.”
Bassey led the team with a plus-20 rating, displaying dominance on both ends of the court. He grabbed seven offensive rebounds, blocked two shots, and shot 7-of-8 from the field, overwhelming the Grizzlies’ big men.
Defensive Mindset
“Great effort, rebounding, blocking shots, rim protection,”
Bassey said, summarizing his skillset. “I bring great defense to the team. I just play my role. I know what a team needs from me and I know what they want from me and I do it every night.”
Currently, the Celtics’ center position is considered to have limited depth, with Neemias Queta, Xavier Tillman, and Luka Garza as the primary options. Boston’s roster is full, but changes are possible. As of July 2024, the average NBA team value stands at $3.85 billion, highlighting the financial stakes of roster decisions (Statista).
Opportunity Knocks
Bassey’s Summer League performance could provide him an opportunity to strengthen the Celtics’ shallow depth chart. Whether he secures a final roster spot remains to be seen, but his initial showing warrants serious consideration from the team.
