Bortoleto Overcomes Strategy Woes in Rain-Soaked Race, Secures Strong Weekend
Imola, Italy – in a dramatic display of adaptability and team spirit, Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto navigated treacherous wet conditions and strategic challenges to secure a positive points finish, leaving behind the “trauma” of a previous race’s strategy. The young Brazilian driver demonstrated remarkable pace, even prompting a team order reversal that highlighted his performance.
The decision to pit was made by Bortoleto before fully assessing track conditions, a consequence of severely worn intermediate tires. “My intermediaries were fully destroyed and I was aside everywhere. So, I said, ‘guys, I need to go to the pits,'” Bortoleto explained. Coincidentally, his teammate Nico Hulkenberg also pitted around the same time, even managing to overtake Bortoleto on track. However, bortoleto soon realized he had a superior pace advantage and requested the positions be swapped. After an initial refusal from the team, they relented, allowing Hulkenberg to yield to Bortoleto, who then proved his stronger pace.
“He was a great teammate today and, as always, to be honest, and we have a very good mood within the team in this regard,” Bortoleto commented on Hulkenberg’s sportsmanship.
the weekend was largely successful for Bortoleto, who outperformed Hulkenberg in both qualifying sessions and both races, including the Sprint race. “I think I extracted everything from the car. Honestly,I’m happy with the weekend. There was nothing more we could have done,” he stated, reflecting on his performance.
while Bortoleto celebrated a strong individual showing, Sauber faced a setback with the resurgence of Williams. The British team introduced a significant upgrade package, with Alex albon securing sixth place. This performance has intensified the battle for fifth in the Constructors’ championship,a position Sauber currently holds. albon acknowledged Williams’ historical strength at Spa-Francorchamps and expressed a desire to validate the upgrade’s effectiveness at the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix.
