Borobudur Temple in Magelang, Central Java, will offer special sunset and sunrise access to visitors during the Chinese New Year period, with tickets priced at Rp350,000 (approximately $22 USD) from February 14-17 and February 2-26, 2026.

The promotion is part of a broader campaign, #ImlekdiCandi (Chinese New Year celebrations), designed to blend the historical significance of the temple with the traditions of the Chinese New Year, according to Gistang Panutur, Commercial Director of InJourney Destination Management.

“The spirit of the Year of the Fire Horse is presented by preparing special events at Borobudur Temple Tourism Park and Prambanan Temple Tourism Park,” Panutur stated to Antara on Sunday, February 15, 2026. InJourney, a state-owned enterprise, is focused on enhancing comfort and safety at both airports and tourist destinations, including Borobudur and Prambanan, according to a recent report.

The celebrations aim to create an inclusive and festive atmosphere for all visitors, emphasizing cultural acculturation and the value of harmony. “We want to ensure that every visitor, both families and individuals, can experience the positive energy of this ‘Year of the Horse’ through an exciting, immersive, and unforgettable experience,” Panutur added.

Lion dance performances are scheduled for February 17, 2026, at both Borobudur and Prambanan Temples. The performance at Prambanan will be conducted by the Naga Winongo Barongsai Association, while the Panbers Jogja Association will perform at Borobudur Temple. These performances, accompanied by traditional drumming and cymbal music, are intended to ward off disappointing luck and usher in a prosperous new year.

A “Wishing Wall Installation” will also be featured at both temple sites, allowing visitors to write down their hopes and prayers for the new year. According to Panutur, the installation aligns with the temple’s role as a place of worship and contemplation, symbolizing aspirations for love, health, happiness, and good fortune.

Tickets for Borobudur Temple access, including climbing tickets which require wristbands and special sandals (upanat), are available online. Sunrise and sunset viewing tickets are limited to 100 people per day. Standard entrance is priced from Rp 25,000.
