Bertrand Cantat, the former frontman of the French rock band Noir Désir, has continued to face public scrutiny and opposition following his release from prison. Cantat was sentenced to eight years in Lithuania in 2004 for the fatal assault on his girlfriend, actress Marie Trintignant, in Vilnius. He was released early in 2007.
After his release, Cantat gradually re-entered the public sphere. In 2010, he collaborated with the Detroit group, releasing an album and embarking on a tour. His first solo album, Love Fati, was released in December 2017.The promotion and subsequent tour for this album were met with controversy, including canceled concerts and protests from feminist organizations. In March 2018, Cantat was reportedly met with shouts of “assassin!” in Grenoble, and by June 11, 2018, he had canceled further scheduled dates.
Further instances of public opposition occurred in 2020 when Cantat canceled a show he had co-written with novelist Caryl Férey. In late 2021, feminist activists attempted to block access to the Théâtre de la Colline in Paris for the premiere of the play Mère, created and directed by Wajdi Mouawad, with music composed by Cantat. In December of the same year, Cantat released a second album with Detroit, titled Paz.
