Boise School District Reviews Response to Timberline High School Threats

Boise School District Reviews Response to Timberline High School Threats

October 13, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Boise School District administrators provided their first public account on Monday, regarding the district’s response to alleged threats made by Timberline High School football players against a female classmate. Officials confirmed that the district initiated a Title IX investigation after reviewing screenshots of the messages, though they declined to provide details on disciplinary actions or specific student identities, citing federal and state privacy laws.

District Contacts Law Enforcement After Snapchat Threats

The incident surfaced on Oct. 2, when a student and her parent presented screenshots of a Snapchat group chat to Timberline High School administration. Shelley Bonds, a district administrative director, told trustees that the school immediately contacted local law enforcement and began Title IX paperwork. However, because the school resource officer was off-campus attending a homecoming parade at Capital High School, an officer did not arrive at Timberline until approximately 1:45 p.m. or 2 p.m., after the targeted student had already left the building.

Robb Thompson, the district’s supervisor for teaching and learning and Title IX coordinator, explained to the board that the district’s internal investigation was paused at the direction of the Boise Police Department. Under Idaho state law passed in March, schools are required to report allegations of abuse to law enforcement before initiating their own inquiries. Consequently, district staff were barred from interviewing students until police authorized the transition. According to idahonews.com, Boise police notified the district on Wednesday, Oct. 7, that the police investigation had concluded, allowing the district to resume its own Title IX and threat assessment proceedings.

Campus Safety and Community Impact

Following the initial report, the district implemented several security and support measures. Bonds reported that the district increased law enforcement presence on the Timberline campus throughout the week of Oct. 5. Counseling services were made available to students, and Principal Chad Wright addressed the student body via video, in addition to holding meetings with staff and the student council. On Tuesday, Oct. 6, the district canceled Timberline’s homecoming football game against Kuna.

Student Brooklynn Reed stated in an interview with KTVB that learning of the threats was “crazy and super sad,” while student Shirley Lewis described the situation as “really scary” and “shocking.” Approximately 100 students conducted a walkout on Wednesday, Oct. 7, to call for justice and transparency in the investigation, as reported by KTVB.

Board Review of Policy and Future Procedures

During the Monday board meeting, trustees reviewed the intersection of board policy, Title IX requirements, and law enforcement protocols. Trustee Krista Hasler noted that the incident has weighed heavily on the community. Board President Dave Wagers affirmed the district’s commitment to addressing the situation, stating that the district would not “shirk away from the leadership responsibilities” required to maintain safety and uphold values.

District officials emphasized that the scope of the problem extends beyond the school’s athletic program. “This isn’t a Timberline issue, a football issue, nor a Boise Schools’ issue. This is a community issue,” Bonds told the trustees. The district plans to partner with local community stakeholders to facilitate broader discussions regarding the nature of the messages and the underlying behavioral concerns.

Current Status of Investigations

While the district has moved into its own Title IX and threat assessment phase as of this week, several questions remain unanswered. The Boise Police Department has not released information regarding whether criminal charges are warranted against those involved in the group chat. Because of the ongoing nature of these legal and administrative processes, the district has not confirmed whether any students have faced disciplinary consequences.

The district has committed to maintaining a heightened security presence through the current week, covering parent-teacher conferences and remaining homecoming activities.
