Bob Seger Bars: The Viral Trend Classifying Boston’s Watering Holes
Brian Daly, a 36-year-aged marketing professional from Watertown, Massachusetts, has become an unlikely social media phenomenon by judging bars based on their willingness to play songs by Bob Seger. For months, Daly has been documenting his visits to Boston-area establishments, asking a simple question: “Is it a bar, or is it a Seger bar?”
Daly’s videos, posted to his Instagram account @wickedfast, show him entering bars, ordering a drink, and then posing the pivotal question to bartenders. Those that comply with a Seger request earn a “certified Seger bar” designation and a corresponding sticker. The videos have garnered millions of views and sparked a growing online following, with fans attempting similar tests in cities across the country.
The project began organically, Daly explained in a recent interview with The Boston Globe. “People think I’m like this crazy Deadhead [for] Bob Seger. I’m really not,” he said, adding that while he enjoys Seger’s music, his appreciation extends to “a bunch of different artists.” He described Seger’s music as “so nostalgic to like, something about growing up in the cold, salty streets of Massachusetts.”
Daly’s videos are filmed with his cousin, Leah, and occasionally feature other guests. The growing popularity of the “Seger bar” concept has even caught the attention of Seger’s marketing team, according to reports. Watertown’s West on Main has already been officially certified as a “Seger Bar,” as documented in a photograph published by the Boston Globe on January 31.
The phenomenon has also spread to Facebook, where a post from Boston, Massachusetts highlighted Daly’s viral videos and his exploration of local bars. Daly, a native of Watertown, has tapped into a cultural vein, prompting a playful assessment of Boston’s nightlife through the lens of a classic rock artist.
Daly’s day job is in marketing for a local law firm, but his evenings are now dedicated to the pursuit of Seger-friendly establishments. The question of whether a bar is willing to play Bob Seger has become a new metric for evaluating the city’s drinking scene, and Daly continues to document his findings online.
