BMW Unveils Neue Klasse ix3,Ushering in next-Gen Electric Era
MUNICH - BMW has officially presented the frist model of its Neue Klasse platform, the new generation BMW ix3. the vehicle showcases notable advancements in battery technology, interior design, and display systems, marking a pivotal shift in the automaker’s electric vehicle strategy.
BMW has focused on optimizing technical solutions, including battery placement and attachment within the chassis. This approach, according to BMW, enhances structural rigidity, lowers the vehicle’s overall height, and streamlines manufacturing processes, possibly reducing production costs. The production methods also aim to maximize space for both passengers and luggage.
While maintaining recognizable BMW exterior styling cues, the ix3 features a highly minimalist cabin. Central to the interior is a 17.9-inch touchscreen running a new iteration of BMW’s iDrive operating system. This represents a move away from physical buttons, with touch controls integrated into the steering wheel. BMW has also eliminated the conventional iDrive controller, transitioning to touchscreen-exclusive operation.
A key innovation is the abandonment of a conventional driver’s screen in favor of a new, panoramic “iDrive” display spanning the width of the vehicle. This aims to replace the traditional Head-up display, projecting data like speed and range onto a narrow strip under the windshield. BMW states the screen is highly customizable. BMW’s chief designer, Adrian van hoidons, acknowledged the challenges faced by engineers and designers in integrating and refining this new display technology.
The BMW ix3 is currently available for order on the German market starting at 68,000 euros, with prices quickly reaching 80,000 euros. Deliveries are expected to begin next year.BMW plans to introduce a more affordable ix3 variant with a single electric motor and reduced power output, increasing accessibility to a wider range of customers.
