berkshire Medical Center Recognized for Excellence in Joint Replacement Surgery
Pittsfield, MA - Berkshire Medical Center (BMC) has earned the Blue Distinction Center+ designation for quality and cost-effectiveness in knee and hip replacement surgeries, demonstrating a commitment to superior patient outcomes and affordable care. The recognition, announced today, signifies BMCS adherence to evidence-based best practices and nationally recognized standards for joint replacement procedures.
The Blue Distinction Centers program, operated by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA), evaluates facilities based on complex quality measures for patient safety and outcomes, developed with input from the medical community. The “+” designation indicates BMC also meets stringent cost benchmarks. This achievement positions BMC among a select group of hospitals nationwide demonstrating excellence in these areas.
According to the BCBSA, nearly one-in-three Americans – approximately 105 million members – are covered by a Blue Cross and Blue Shield company. The increasing demand for joint replacement surgeries is underscored by data; a 2014 study published in J Bone Joint Surg Am noted the more rapid growth of total knee arthroplasty volume compared with total hip arthroplasty volume. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons reported on annual incidents of common musculoskeletal procedures in March 2014.
“Blue Distinction Centers met overall quality measures for patient safety and outcomes,” states facts provided by the BCBSA. “Each facility’s cost of care is evaluated using data from its Local Blue Plan.”
Local Blue Plans may have additional criteria for facilities within their service area, and consumers are encouraged to contact their Local Blue Plan for specific details regarding coverage and in-network status.
