Diagonale des Fous : l

Blandine L’Hirondel continues Mascareignes race with shoulder dislocation

October 16, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Blandine L’Hirondel, the 2026 UTMB champion and 2025 Diagonale des Fous winner, is continuing to compete in the Mascareignes trail race on Reunion Island despite suffering a shoulder dislocation following a fall. The athlete, who is also a gynecologist, opted to remain in the 74-kilometer event to honor the memory of a friend’s daughter. The 35-year-old runner previously won the Diagonale des Fous, a 180-kilometer course with 10,500 meters of positive elevation gain, finishing 8th overall in 27 h 26 min 09 s. Just six weeks ago, she completed the UTMB in 21 h 54 min 49 s, a race covering 173 kilometers and 10,000 meters of positive elevation gain.

A Shift from Elite Competition to Personal Commitment

While L’Hirondel is a dominant force in ultra-trail running, her participation in this year’s Grand Raid de La Réunion is defined by a personal tribute rather than a pursuit of the podium. The race serves as a memorial for Lola, the daughter of friends who introduced L’Hirondel to trail running a decade ago during her medical internship on the island. Lola passed away this summer at age 23. L’Hirondel’s primary goal is to complete the course alongside the parents of the deceased, prioritizing this emotional objective over her usual competitive performance. Speaking to L’Équipe, she stated, “Through this race, I want to pay tribute to Lola, but also to give David and Valérie a taste for sport again.” She added that if the effort could show others who recently lost loved ones that sport can offer a goal and revive emotions, then “all the better.”

Shoulder Dislocation Slows L’Hirondel in Women’s Race

The incident occurred during the night following the race’s start on Thursday, October 15, at 11:00 p.m. (metropolitan time). Despite the severity of a shoulder dislocation, L’Hirondel was observed at a refueling station with her arm supported by a makeshift bandage. While she maintained a strong position early in the race, her velocity dropped significantly as a result of the injury. Between the 41.4-kilometer mark and the 50.9-kilometer checkpoint, her average speed fell from 8.2 km/h to 4.1 km/h. By the 58.3-kilometer mark at Grande Chaloupe, she had moved to 8th place in the women’s classification and 67th overall. She had held her position until the chemin Ratinaud at kilometer 41.4 before dropping to fourth place at La Possession at kilometer 50.9.

The Challenges of Sustained Athletic Performance Post-Injury

The native of Caen, now living in Ariège, is continuing her progression despite being visibly affected by pain. Though she was in contention for a podium finish, the injury to her right shoulder shifted the objective of the race. The decision to continue despite the risk of aggravating the injury at the end of the season shows a personal commitment that outweighs the sporting result.

Logistical Realities of the Grand Raid

The Mascareignes is one of five distinct events under the Grand Raid de La Réunion umbrella, covering 74.7 kilometers with 3,800 meters of vertical gain. The other events include the Diagonale des Fous, the Trail de Bourbon, the Relais Zembrocal, and the Métis Trail. The race launched Friday, October 16, 2026, at 1:00 a.m. local time from Hell-Bourg in the Salazie cirque. The race concludes at the La Redoute stadium in Saint-Denis.

As L’Hirondel pushes toward the finish line, her progress remains a focal point for the trail community. The athlete, who recently secured an UTMB victory while managing an endofibrose iliaque—a condition requiring future surgical intervention—has demonstrated a consistent pattern of competing through physical adversity. Her current journey toward Saint-Denis is expected to conclude with her supporters, marking the end of a race that has been characterized by its emotional resonance rather than its place in the 2026 racing calendar.
