BJ Fox: Rising Stand-Up Comedy Star in Japan

by Emma Walker – News Editor

BJ Fox, a British-born bilingual comedian, is headlining a double bill of Japanese-language stand-up comedy shows with Yurié Collins at Tokyo Comedy Bar on February 26th and 27th. The performances, titled “Japanese Stand-up Comedy Double Single Special!”, feature Fox’s new display, “My Stand-up Comedy Theory,” which explores the challenges of translating humor across cultures.

Fox, who founded Tokyo’s only stand-up comedy club, Tokyo Comedy Bar, questions how to adapt jokes for different audiences in his performance, specifically focusing on the differences between Japanese and Western sensibilities. According to promotional material, he delivers his observations in his signature “candid style.”

The Tokyo Comedy Bar hosts regular Japanese-language stand-up shows on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Fox too appears in the NHK drama “Home Sweet Tokyo” and has acted in Netflix original series, balancing his work as a comedian, entrepreneur, actor, and podcaster. He has a social media following exceeding 120,000.

Alongside his performances, Fox co-hosts the podcast “裏技英語” (Ura-waza Eigo, or “Lifehack English”) with Japanese comedian Terumi Ishii, which is updated every Monday. His show at Tokyo Comedy Bar is described as popular and consistently draws audiences.

The February 26th performance begins at 6:45 PM and concludes at 8:25 PM, whereas the February 27th show runs from 9:00 PM to 10:40 PM. Tickets for the first performance are available through a separate link, while tickets for the second performance are being sold on the Tokyo Comedy Bar website.
