Stig Lægden has been appointed the new bishop of the North Hålogaland Diocese,the appointment committee announced February 6,2025. Lægden, currently holding a position within the Diocese, is favored to succeed the outgoing bishop, Olav Øygard.
The selection of Lægden marks a pivotal moment for the North Hålogaland Diocese, encompassing Norway’s northernmost counties. The bishopric serves a geographically vast and culturally diverse region,and Lægden’s leadership will be crucial in addressing the evolving spiritual and societal needs of its communities. His formal consecration and assumption of duties are slated for a date to be announced, initiating a new chapter for the diocese.
Prior to the announcement, Bishop Olav Øygard had recently been cleared of allegations, as reported January 14, 2025. The appointment committee’s decision follows a thorough evaluation process, considering candidates from across the Church of Norway.
