Binance Covers Heist Loss After 58B Kroner Hack

Binance Covers Heist Loss After 58B Kroner Hack

October 31, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

A Twenty-Minute Heist That Shook Global Markets

Hackers drained $6.3 billion, roughly 58 billion Norwegian kroner, from the cryptocurrency exchange Binance in just 20 minutes, according to reports. The massive digital theft ranks as the largest in history, eclipsing a February 2025 breach where hackers tied to North Korea stole $1.5 billion from the Bybit exchange.

From an Employee Laptop to Ten Blockchains

Binance stated in posts on X that its initial investigations indicate the security breach began with a compromised laptop belonging to a company employee. This entry point granted the attacker access to an internal system, enabling unauthorized cryptocurrency withdrawals across ten different blockchain networks within minutes. Analytics firms including TRM Labs, Chainalysis, and Elliptic attributed the operation to North Korean hackers, specifically pointing to the hacker group TraderTraitor. North Korea has denied involvement in such cyberattacks, dismissing similar accusations as fabricated slander.

Corporate Reserves Absorb the Blow

Binance announced that it will absorb the entire financial loss rather than passing it on to users. The exchange reported that it has recovered or replaced 90 percent of the stolen assets using its own corporate reserves, with the remaining ten percent consisting of smaller digital currencies. While about $3 billion of the stolen funds were successfully frozen across various platforms, analysts note that the attackers retain control over significant amounts of Bitcoin and Ether that cannot be frozen. Binance halted individual user withdrawals immediately following the breach to rebuild its platform systems, scheduling the restoration of withdrawal capabilities for Sunday.

Vulnerable Administrative Privileges Under Scrutiny

In Norway, cybersecurity experts warned that the incident highlights systemic vulnerabilities in digital infrastructure. Dr. Frode van der Laak at NTNU told TV 2 that organizations routinely build secure vaults while leaving extensive administrative privileges vulnerable to human targeting. Nasjonal sikkerheitsmyndighet previously raised its cyber security threat level earlier in the week, pointing to a sharpened security climate across digital networks.
