Billie Jean king, a titan of social change, justice, and gender equality, is embracing a lifelong commitment to learning at 81 years old.
The 31-time Grand Slam champion, who founded the Women’s Tennis Association, returned to California State University, Los Angeles (Cal State LA) this spring. She is pursuing the degree she left behind in 1964 to embark on her professional tennis career.
King, a revered figure at Cal State LA with a statue near the campus tennis courts, is thoroughly enjoying her academic pursuits. “I’m having a great time,” the former World No.1 shared with the Los Angeles Times.
King, who travels extensively for her global commitments, is completing her coursework remotely and engaging in one-on-one sessions with professors.
having already completed several courses this year, King, a Presidential medal of Freedom recipient, is set to begin the fall semester as a senior. She is on track to earn her bachelor’s degree in history next spring, a fitting field for someone who has shaped so much of it.
In alignment with her dedication to helping others and breaking barriers, King has earned additional credits for her work with incarcerated students participating in Cal State LA’s Prison Graduation Initiative.
“They have made a commitment to improving their lives through education,” king told the Times after addressing 32 imprisoned students. “Getting their degree will be life-changing for them.”
