O’Brien Fires Back at Castellanos Amidst Transfer Dispute
Boston College Coach Disputes Claims from Former QB Now at Florida State
Boston College Head Coach Bill O’Brien has publicly responded to critical remarks made by former Eagles quarterback Tommy Castellanos, who recently transferred to Florida State. Castellanos refuted any suggestion that he abandoned his team after losing his starting position last season.
Coach O’Brien Defends Support for Castellanos
Addressing the controversy, O’Brien stated that the coaching staff provided significant support and instruction to Tommy Castellanos during his time at Boston College. He conveyed well wishes for Castellanos‘s future endeavors, emphasizing that the quarterback was encouraged to return and compete for his job.
“Tommy can think what he wants,” O’Brien said. “We supported the hell out of Tommy. We coached Tommy, we taught Tommy. I wish him the best.
“We met with Grayson (James), we told him the team needs you, come back and compete and win your job back. It’s called life — L-I-F-E. Deal with adversity. He’s fine. He’s the starting QB at Florida State. It worked out well. I wish him the best.”

Castellanos, speaking at ACC Media Days, maintained his confidence, asserting his capabilities and expressing his desire to play for a supportive team where he can perform freely. He spent two seasons as the primary starter for the Eagles before his transfer to Florida State for the 2025 season.
And that’s why my confidence hasn’t shied away,” Castellanos said at ACC Media Days on Wednesday. “I know what I’m capable of and what I’ve done and what I’m going to do this year with the right team, that’s going to support me and let me be myself and be happy and play and be loose.”

Future Schedules and Key Matchups
Boston College’s 2025 schedule includes matchups against Clemson, Louisville, Notre Dame, and SMU. Florida State, meanwhile, is set to face Alabama in a highly anticipated season opener on August 30th. Castellanos‘s past comments regarding the Crimson Tide have heightened interest in this Week 1 contest, which kicks off at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC. Alabama is currently favored by 13.5 points according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
The Seminoles’ schedule also features games against Miami, Clemson, and Florida later in the season. While Castellanos and O’Brien will not face each other on the field this year, the situation highlights differing perspectives on Castellanos‘s departure and his subsequent transfer.
