Biathlon World Cup Holmenkollen: Öberg Wins Women’s Pursuit | Results
Sweden’s Hanna Öbergová won the women’s 10km pursuit race at the Biathlon World Cup in Holmenkollen, Norway, on Saturday, edging out France’s Julia Simonová by half a second. The victory secured Öbergová her first-ever World Cup pursuit title and marked the first Sprint/Pursuit double of her career.
Öbergová completed the course in 30 minutes and 14.0 seconds, despite incurring three penalty loops. Simonová, with a single penalty, finished just behind at 30:14.5. Elvira Öbergová, Hanna’s sister, rounded out the podium in third place with a time of 30:37.2, also with one penalty.
The race also saw French biathlete Lou Jeanmonnotová clinch the small crystal globe for overall victory in the pursuit discipline. Despite finishing fourth, 57.2 seconds behind Öbergová, Jeanmonnotová’s consistent performance throughout the season allowed her to narrowly surpass Suvi Minkkinen of Finland in the final standings. Jeanmonnotová, who already held the overall World Cup lead, finished with one penalty.
The competition was particularly close at the top, with Öbergová and Simonová battling for the lead throughout the race. Öbergová ultimately secured the win with a strong sprint to the finish. “Hanna’s three-penalty win was her first-ever World Cup Pursuit victory,” according to Biathlonworld.com.
For the Slovakian team, Paulína Bátovská Fialková finished 18th, marking her final stíhačka (pursuit) race of her career. She incurred three penalties, finishing 2 minutes and 15.3 seconds behind Öbergová. “The first half of the race was going well, I was close to something nice. Unfortunately, I got very shaky at the first standing shot. I blame myself for not taking one or two more breaths before I started shooting. Two mistakes and three hundred meters extra had an effect on my legs. I lacked strength at the end,” Bátovská Fialková told Slovenský biatlon.
Anastasia Kuzminová finished 49th, with five penalties and a time 4 minutes and 26.9 seconds slower than the winner. Ema Kapustová placed 53rd, incurring two penalties and finishing 5 minutes and 6.8 seconds behind Öbergová. All three Slovakian biathletes experienced a decline in performance compared to their results in the sprint event.
Italy’s Lisa Vittozzi finished fifth, despite accumulating five penalties, while Germany’s Vanessa Voigt shot cleanly to secure sixth place. The race highlighted the competitive nature of the Biathlon World Cup, with small margins separating the top competitors.
