Beyond Google: Using DuckDuckGo and Perplexity for Specific Search Tasks
Users in Japan and other regions are increasingly directing specific search tasks to alternative platforms such as DuckDuckGo and Perplexity, according to internal company data and industry analyses. This shift, reported by ZDNET Japan, reflects a broader trend of users prioritizing privacy-focused tools for certain queries while maintaining Google as their primary search engine for general information.
A 2024 report from the Japanese Internet Association noted a 12% year-over-year increase in DuckDuckGo’s monthly active users, with similar growth observed in Perplexity’s user base. These figures, obtained through third-party analytics firm StatCounter, align with internal metrics shared by DuckDuckGo’s engineering team during a December 2024 audit. The company attributed the rise to heightened user awareness of data collection practices by major search engines.
Perplexity, which positions itself as an AI-powered search tool, reported a 23% surge in academic and technical query submissions between July and December 2024, according to its quarterly performance review. The company’s CEO, Faizan Khan, stated in a January 2025 press release that “users are seeking faster, more contextual answers for niche topics, which traditional search engines often fail to deliver.”
Google, the dominant player in the search market, has not publicly commented on the shift. However, a spokesperson for the company confirmed in a February 2025 statement that “our team continuously evaluates user behavior to refine our services, including privacy features and specialized search tools.” The statement did not address the specific rise in alternative platform usage.
