Better to Be a Ghoul Than the Alternative | [Niche Keyword]

February 25, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

A Halloween display featuring meticulously crafted, life-sized skeletal figures and simulated decaying environments has sparked debate in the compact town of Havenwood, Maine. The display, erected by resident Arthur Penhaligon, has drawn both crowds and complaints, with some residents describing it as “ghoulish” and unsettling, while others defend it as harmless seasonal fun.

Penhaligon, a retired special effects artist, began constructing the display in early October, transforming his front yard into a scene reminiscent of a classic horror film. The exhibit includes animatronic figures, fog machines, and detailed props designed to evoke a sense of dread and macabre curiosity. According to local police records, the Havenwood Sheriff’s Department received three complaints regarding the display within the first week of its unveiling. The complaints centered on concerns about the display’s potential to frighten young children and disrupt the peace of the neighborhood.

“Its quality isn’t the horror itself but the ghoulish environment and subtle danger that lies beneath,” commented Michael Lee Simpson in a recent review of a similar themed film, a sentiment echoed by some Havenwood residents who identify the display excessively realistic. Although, Penhaligon maintains that his intention is not to cause distress, but to provide a creative and immersive Halloween experience. “I’ve always been fascinated by the artistry of horror,” Penhaligon stated in a brief interview with the Havenwood Gazette. “It’s about creating an atmosphere, a story. It’s all in good fun.”

The debate has extended to the Havenwood town council, which held a special meeting on Tuesday evening to discuss the matter. Council members debated whether the display violated any existing town ordinances, specifically those pertaining to public nuisance and disturbing the peace. According to the town clerk’s office, Havenwood does not currently have any specific regulations governing Halloween displays. Councilman Robert Davies proposed drafting a new ordinance to address such displays in the future, but the proposal was met with resistance from other council members who argued that it would infringe upon residents’ freedom of expression.

The discussion also touched upon the broader cultural context of Halloween and the increasing popularity of elaborate, and sometimes frightening, displays. As one resident pointed out during the public comment period, “Aquarius Looking for a ghoulish time?” as recently advertised by Refinery29, suggesting a growing acceptance of darker themes during the holiday season. The Wall Street Journal reported that critics of prediction markets decry betting on wars as “ghoulish and tasteless,” demonstrating a sensitivity to the appropriation of morbid imagery, but also highlighting its prevalence in public discourse.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the Havenwood town council has not reached a consensus on the matter. Council members have agreed to continue discussing the issue at their next regularly scheduled meeting on November 15th, leaving Penhaligon’s display in place for the remainder of the Halloween season. The Havenwood Sheriff’s Department has stated that it will continue to monitor the situation and respond to any further complaints.
