Student Health Programs Receive Boost
A new investment will strengthen mental and physical health initiatives for high school students, according to recent reports. The funding aims to provide more support to students, improving their well-being and academic success.
Positive Changes in Student Well-being
Student health initiatives are crucial for overall wellness, learning, and social adjustment, so improvements in this area are extremely welcome. These initiatives have shown positive impacts on the mental and physical health of high school students.
A total of SEK 5 million has been assigned to student health programs in upper secondary schools. This funding enables increased staffing and resources for student health teams, which fosters better conditions for students and improves school safety.
Latest survey results reveal significant improvements in several areas. Both school safety and study environments have become more secure. Stress levels among students have decreased. Additionally, the proportion of students experiencing vulnerability on social media has dropped dramatically.
“We are seeing very gratifying results, especially regarding students’ mental health and safety in school. It is of the utmost importance that we continue to work to give all students the support they need to feel good and succeed in their studies,”
—Linnea Jägestedt, Chair of the Board of Education
The investment in student health has facilitated new hires and enhanced resources at numerous upper secondary schools. This includes a new special educator at Berzelius School and increased resources for counselors and school nurses at Folkungaskolan. These efforts aim to address the need for both preventive and remedial interventions, ensuring that students receive appropriate support promptly.
It is important to continue focusing on bolstering student health and offering early interventions to address mental health concerns. All students deserve a safe school environment and the best possible opportunities to excel in their studies and feel supported.
New Staff and Resource Allocations
The Board of Education’s internal budget for 2025 includes several reinforcements for student health programs:
- Berzelius School: New Special Educator
- Folkungaskolan: Reinforced curator and school nursing resources
- Birgitta School/Linnaeus Gymnasium: School host linked to the student health team
- Cathedral School: New curator
- Anders Ljungstedt’s Gymnasium: Consultant resource
According to a 2024 study, student mental health is a growing concern, with over 20% of adolescents reporting symptoms of depression (CDC).
These resources will ensure students have access to the support they need.
