Best Used Skoda Superb Combi Engines: An Efficient Alternative to Diesel

July 9, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

A 2018 Skoda Superb Combi equipped with a 1.6-liter diesel engine achieved a fuel consumption rate of 3.9 liters per 100 kilometers during a test drive reported by Garáž.cz, a Czech automotive publication. The vehicle, priced at 290,000 Czech crowns (approximately $12,500) in the used car market, was highlighted as an example of cost-effective long-distance travel, according to the outlet’s analysis.

The test, conducted on a mix of highways and rural roads, measured the car’s efficiency under typical driving conditions. A representative from Skoda’s Czech branch confirmed that the 1.6-liter diesel engine, part of the company’s EA288 series, is designed to balance performance with low fuel consumption. “This engine model has consistently demonstrated reliability and efficiency in both urban and highway settings,” the spokesperson said.

Garáž.cz’s report noted that the Superb Combi’s aerodynamic design and lightweight materials contributed to its fuel economy. The vehicle’s 60-liter fuel tank allows for a range of up to 1,500 kilometers on a single fill, a figure corroborated by independent automotive testing organization AutoTest.cz. “The combination of engine efficiency and tank capacity makes this model particularly appealing for drivers prioritizing cost savings over high-speed performance,” AutoTest.cz stated in a 2022 review.

Industry observers pointed to broader trends in the Czech used car market, where diesel vehicles remain popular despite EU regulations targeting carbon emissions. According to data from the Czech Association of Automobile Manufacturers, diesel cars accounted for 42% of used vehicle sales in 2023, driven by their lower operating costs compared to gasoline or electric models. However, some experts caution that stricter emissions standards may reduce demand for older diesel engines in the coming years.

Skoda Superb 2021 review: the best value car in the world?

A 2021 study by the Czech Technical University in Prague found that the 1.6-liter diesel engine in the Superb Combi achieved an average fuel efficiency of 4.1 liters per 100 kilometers in real-world conditions, slightly higher than the 3.9-liter figure reported by Garáž.cz. The discrepancy, the study noted, could be attributed to varying driving styles and road conditions during tests.

Skoda’s current lineup includes a 1.5-liter TSI petrol engine and a 2.0-liter TDI diesel option for the Superb model, both of which the company claims meet Euro 6d emissions standards. The 1.6-liter engine, introduced in 2016, is no longer produced but remains a common feature in used vehicles from the 2015–2018 production range.

Garáž.cz’s report emphasized that the Superb Combi’s fuel efficiency is particularly advantageous for long-distance commuters and frequent travelers. “For drivers covering 20,000–30,000 kilometers annually, the savings on fuel can offset the higher initial cost of a diesel vehicle,” the publication stated. However, the article acknowledged that electric vehicles are increasingly competing in the market, with models like the Skoda Enyaq iV offering lower long-term operating costs in regions with robust charging infrastructure.

As of July 2024, the Czech government has not announced new restrictions on diesel vehicles, but local municipalities are implementing low-emission zones that may affect older models. The impact of these policies on the used car market remains uncertain, according to a report by the Czech Economic Institute.
