Best USB Gadgets to Boost Your Productivity & Security in 2024

February 17, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Windows 11 users relying on USB keyboards and mice are facing unexpected functionality issues following the release of update KB5066835, with Microsoft acknowledging a bug impacting the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). The issue prevents the use of USB keyboards and mice within WinRE, potentially hindering system recovery efforts.

The problem, first reported by users and tech news outlets in late January 2026, affects the ability to navigate and utilize the WinRE, a critical component for troubleshooting and repairing Windows installations. According to a report from Tom’s Hardware, the bug effectively renders USB peripherals unusable when attempting to access recovery options. Neowin also reported on the issue, noting Microsoft’s official acknowledgement of the problem.

While the core functionality of Windows 11 remains unaffected for most users, the inability to use USB input devices within WinRE poses a significant challenge for those needing to perform system restores, troubleshoot boot issues, or access advanced repair tools. The timing of the bug is particularly concerning, as WinRE is often the last line of defense when a system fails to start normally.

The emergence of this issue coincides with a broader trend of increased functionality within USB technology. Beyond simple data transfer, USB ports are now capable of delivering power and transmitting high-definition video, supporting a growing ecosystem of peripherals. A recent article highlighted the versatility of USB devices, ranging from simple switches to complex security keys.

For users who frequently work across multiple computers, devices like the Benfei USB 3.0 Switch offer a solution to avoid the constant plugging and unplugging of peripherals. Similarly, USB hubs, such as the Berlat USB/USB C Hub, address the issue of limited port availability on modern laptops and desktops. These devices, while not directly related to the WinRE bug, underscore the increasing reliance on USB connectivity.

Security-focused USB devices are also gaining prominence. The Thetis Pro FIDO2 Security Key, for example, provides a hardware-based authentication layer, offering stronger protection against phishing and account breaches than traditional passwords or SMS-based two-factor authentication. The Saicoo Smart Card Reader offers similar benefits, enabling the use of smart cards for secure access to systems.

Microsoft has not yet released a fix for the WinRE bug, but has acknowledged the issue and is reportedly working on a resolution. The company has not provided a timeline for the release of a patch. Users currently experiencing the problem may need to rely on alternative recovery methods, if available, or seek assistance from a qualified technician.
