Best POS Cash Registers for Small Business [2024] – Features & Prices

February 12, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

POS Systems Replace Traditional Cash Registers for Tiny Businesses

The market for traditional electronic cash registers is shrinking as point-of-sale (POS) systems become the preferred choice for small businesses, according to industry analysts. Major manufacturers are halting production of standalone cash registers, signaling a definitive shift toward integrated POS solutions.

The transition is driven by the expanded functionality offered by POS systems, which now extend beyond simple payment processing to include inventory management, customer data analytics and streamlined operations across multiple locations. Shopify POS, for example, is reported to offer a 22% lower total cost of ownership (TCO) compared to competitors, according to an independent consulting firm’s research.

Several POS systems are currently leading the market. Shopify’s system boasts fully customizable features, including inventory tracking, staff management, and advanced sales analytics. Transaction fees are 2.6% plus 10 cents per transaction, with hardware costs ranging from $49 to $999+. Square offers in-person transaction fees of 2.6% plus 15 cents, and hardware costs between $59 and $799. Lightspeed charges 2.6% plus 10 cents per in-person transaction, but does not publicly list its hardware prices.

Clover systems start at 2.3% plus 10 cents per transaction, with hardware ranging from $349 to $1,899+. Toast, popular among restaurants, has transaction fees between 2.49% and 3.09% plus 15 cents per transaction, and offers options with no upfront costs or a $700+ upfront investment.

According to a recent report, POS systems with cash register functionality are ideal for businesses needing advanced management capabilities, industry-specific features, or synchronization between in-store and online sales. Simple electronic cash registers may still suffice for businesses requiring only payment acceptance.

Square currently holds a 5.0 rating from NerdWallet, offering in-person processing at 2.6% + $0.15 and online processing at 3.3% + $0.30. Monthly plans range from free to $149. Lightspeed, rated 3.5 by NerdWallet, charges 2.6% + $0.10 for in-person transactions, and 2.9% + $0.30 online, with monthly plans starting at $109.
