Benfica 0-1 Real Madrid: Champions League Play-off First Leg Result

February 18, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Benfica suffered a 1-0 defeat to Real Madrid on Wednesday evening in the first leg of their Champions League play-off tie, with Vinícius Júnior scoring the decisive goal in the 50th minute. The match, played at a record-breaking Estádio da Luz with 66,387 spectators, sets the stage for a crucial second leg in Madrid on February 25th.

The loss marks the first defeat for Benfica in this stage of the competition, following their impressive 4-2 victory over Real Madrid just three weeks prior in the final match of the group stage. That earlier win, secured by a dramatic goal from goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin, had initially propelled Benfica into a favorable position.

Despite the home advantage and a capacity crowd, Benfica struggled to break down a resolute Real Madrid defense. The Spanish side, under pressure to perform after their previous defeat at the Luz, appeared strategically focused on containing Benfica’s attacking threats.

Real Madrid’s coach, Álvaro Arbeloa, stated that the team approached the match with a determination to win, dismissing any notion of seeking revenge for the January loss. “We do not feel vengeance. We feel that we have to win. Our objective is to win the Champions League,” he said, according to reports.

Benfica’s manager, José Mourinho, had reported that his squad was almost at full strength for the match, with the return of Alexander Bah and Richard Ríos bolstering the team’s options. However, this was not enough to overcome Real Madrid’s tactical approach.

The winner of the two-legged tie will advance to face either Sporting CP or Manchester City in the round of 16. The second leg is scheduled for February 25th at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid.
