new Research: Daily Tea Advice Increased to 2-3 Cups for Optimal Health Benefits
ISTANBUL – For years, health experts have suggested a single cup of tea a day could contribute to well-being. However, nutrition and phytotherapy specialists are now asserting that this recommendation falls short, and that regular consumption of two to three cups daily is necesary to unlock tea’s full potential.
The shift in advice comes as research highlights the powerful benefits of polyphenols and antioxidant compounds – especially abundant in black and green teas – in protecting cells from free radical damage, bolstering cardiovascular health, and strengthening the immune system.
“Being limited to one cup of tea prevents you from fully benefiting from its advantages,” experts stated, emphasizing the importance of consistent, moderate intake. Drinking this increased amount supports blood circulation and promotes healthy digestive function.
Beyond immunity, studies demonstrate a link between regular tea consumption and improved heart health. Researchers have found that it can reduce the risk of heart attack and preserve vascular flexibility. The amino acid L-theanine,present in tea,is also credited with calming the nervous system, reducing stress and anxiety, and enhancing mental focus.
Though, experts caution against overindulgence. Consuming more than 5-6 cups of tea per day can lead to negative side effects, including insomnia, decreased iron absorption, and heart palpitations due to caffeine.
To maximize benefits, specialists recommend brewing tea gently to avoid excessive tannin levels, which can irritate the stomach. Enjoying tea without added sugar is also advised for both health and calorie control. Moreover, using a glass or porcelain teapot prevents the development of unwanted metallic flavors.
“Drinking tea in the right amount and in the right way strengthens immunity while keeping the body warm during the winter months,” experts concluded. The new guidance represents a significant update to previous recommendations: the advice is now to drink at least two or three cups of tea a day, not just one.
