Belgium was placed in a group with Slovenia, Ireland and Albania. Only the top 2 qualified for the Elite Round.
Last week, Belgium had already drawn its first match against Slovenia (1-1) and won 2-0 against Albania (2 goals from Ghent player Fernandez Pardo).
In the final match against Ireland, the pressure was still on somewhat. The Belgians, with national coach Wesley Sonck on the sidelines, dominated the match, but had difficulty gaining distance.
That worked just after halftime. Stanis Idumbo (Ajax) provided the assist, Tristan Degreef (Anderlecht of the RSCA Futures) finished. It would turn out to be the only goal of the match.
Belgium wins its group and is allowed to go to the Elite Round, a kind of intermediate round before the actual European Championship. The draw for this has yet to take place. The European U19 Championship will take place in Northern Ireland from July 15 to 28.
The Belgian U17 team has also qualified for the Elite Round. The Belgians were actually supposed to play against Israel, but they withdrew from the tournament due to the war in Gaza.
The Belgians finish 2nd in the group, after a logical win against Gibraltar (4-0) and a small defeat against Wales (0-1).
